||This paper discusses conceptual design from theperspective of U.S. architectural practice. During theprevious twenty years of computer-aided architecturaldesign, the underlying paradigm has mimicked a paper-basedtechnology. As a result, the computer has not significant-ly impacted conceptual design approaches. The future ofdesign, however, is proposed to be in building modeling. Ashort review of building modeling is provided. Someprospects for conceptual design, based on buildingmodeling and new technologies, are proposed
