Paper title: Unifying product definition and standardsrepreseatation with a specification-orientatedorganisation of design information

Summary: This paper considers two apparently disparate problems to havethe same conceptual issue at root. Firstly , the constitution of amodel for building design standards and codes, from whichdifferent computer representations can be derived. Secondly, thecontent of a Generic Product Data Model, as a neutralrepresentation on which to base the implementation of any dataexchange technique. A specification-orientated organisation ofdesign information is proposed as a basis for a unified approachto these models. The meaning of the concept of specification isconsidered in terms of representation as well. as content , and theconcept of a product in relation to specification . The extent towhich computer object- orientated database and programmingtechniques can model specification-orientated informationhandling in design is considered. The scope of STEP is discussedin this context . Some features of a standard for the creation anduse of specifications are outlined as computer databaserequirements for hand1ing design information.
